Canning with Debby.

I have never canned before, but after reading a blog post from my cousin all about her canning adventures I decided it might be something I would enjoy.  She was nice enough to invite me to come to her place (near Seattle) for a few days to teach me how.  We made and canned marinara sauce.  I used 10 lbs. of tomatoes from our garden, but bought the other 40 lbs. from a guy off craigslist.  Elna and I had such a great time!  I only wish we lived closer—3 hours each way is too much to do as often as I would like to do it.

We were very busy the few days I was there, but Debby managed to capture these few photos of Elna and her girls, Madeleine & Diane.

I came away with 26 quarts and 2 pints.  Now we’re both stocked up for the year!

  1. I love canning! Well---I love it if i'm doing it with someone--otherwise it goes real slow! And actually I've only done peaches, but I do them every year! This year I actually canned over 30 quarts--woo-hoo! Of course, I forbid anyone from eating them until at the very LEAST the end of October. :)

  2. Reminds me of when I would drive from Santa Monica up to Carpinteria and spend a couple days with your mom. That's when we made the Raggedy Ann's, and Cabbage Patch dolls, and refinished your mom's kitchen cabinets, and did lots of Counted Cross stitch projects. Ray was always traveling and I wasn't so lonely when I'd go up there.

Perhaps during Brian's busy season you can go again.
